Save the Shire

Hit ‘play’ to listen to our first newsletter!
Taking a stand and restoring the Land for our past, present and future generations.

Greetings and welcome to the Elemental Collective Newsletter! We are a small but dedicated group of educators, facilitators, chefs, creatives, mothers and fathers, and so much more. In these challenging times, we have come together to offer something special. To get here, that is, where we are at this moment, we have had to reinvent ourselves many times. Living in ‘interesting times’ can be both a blessing and a curse.  But no one gets very far with a curse falling on their heads, or filling their hearts. And in point of fact, we have been showered with many blessings. These blessings come from one place: our Creator. We steadfastly believe that without acknowledging Creator and this Divine Creation we find ourselves in the midst of, we are more prey to the forces of confusion, division, and the chaos that are enveloping the world; in a word, no one wants to be cursed. Being blessed on the other hand, requires the acknowledgement and responsibility that we have been given this gift of life, an understanding of our current conditions and a splash of wisdom to carry forth the torch of renewal into uncertain territory. We have taken up this challenge with love and as if our lives and the lives of our children are at stake, because in a very real sense, they are. What proceeds in this presentation is a visionary and grounded exploration of what we have been doing over the past several years as well as what we intend to accomplish in the years to come. As we forge ahead we have come to the solid recognition that we cannot do this without you. We never intended to do this alone. Raising a barn or building an ark, requires a highly coordinated group effort. And now that we’ve got your attention, please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Wolf Pack Tool Kit

Our first season of Wolf Pack class 2020 will be focusing on primitive tool making and usage as a survival necessity in the Age of high tech.

Every reward deserves a good challenge.  The challenge that lays before you: to integrate your ancestral roots with your living body. Simple, right?!

Diving into the depths of your Primal Mind. Image by Peter Strain

As we swim (or drown) in a world of high tech wizardry, as willing and unwitting guinea pigs, or high end users, it is easy to feel like a cork bobbing in an ocean of gizmos, images and black mirrors.  Where is earth situated at this point?  Where is your body for that matter, in what matrix does it lie?

Wake up Neo, the Matrix has you!

Through the sympathetic magic of primal technology, your ancient hands (look at your hands, the original tools) will be guided to craft a primitive tool kit with stone, bone, antler, shell, wood, plants, and broken glass as your materials.  Forsaken but not forgotten knowledge that you will re-member back into reality by fusing your native human know-how, however dilapidated, with a re-wilding pack of humans who are up to the challenge.

By the end of the year, if you’re still with us, we will venture together on a ‘surviving with the elements’ campout to hone the skills and tools you gathered throughout the 4 seasons to see how far we can arrive at our far-reaching challenge.  The rewardS are suited to the challenge:  the experience and knowledge gained, and fellowship formed.  And your Wolf Pack tool kit of course.

(Your tool kit may or may not resemble these tool kits, consider these images mind seeds planted in your fertile consciousness…)

$25/class or $200 for the season (introductory prices)

E-transfers can be made to  Percentage of proceeds for enrolment will go to the Save the Shire Fund.

Please dress for weather in whatever gear you feel comfortable in. It is important to work with what suits you. Everyone is at a different level of wildness and knowledge, and we are here to learn from each other, not show off. Tea and fire will be an essential part of Wolf Pack, but bring a lunch and beverage to sustain you in the elements.

Dante’s Paradiso

Return of the GreenMan

In the beginning was Vision and Creator breathed Life into it and made it so.

My vision springs out of a deeply rooted philosophy of engagement and play with original wild, creative forces swirling around and within us. Nature is Truth.  I take a stand that refuses to be domesticated into an inert, passive, controlled subject at the whim of dis-eased and parasitic forces.  We live in an Age that is at a crossroads: we can work, co-habitate and play within Nature through a benevolent exchange of Human Culture with the other-than-human Beings in the Earth, through honouring Natural Law (Logos) or we can continue the historic path of domination, addiction and enslavement that despoils our one and only Holy Home World.  I resist and persist through healing integrity.

I am committed to this practice through my out-of-doors school offerings at Elemental Academy, and overseeing a symphony of community gatherings, events and efforts in this direction. I see this as a real world and online sponsorship that can offer opportunities and membership, as well as acquiring assistance and donations for those people outside of the Co-operative who wish to assist us in our endeavours, and might not be able to directly support us.

I envision a movement of ‘Elemental Guardians’, through a co-mentoring of children, youth and adults that bring their unique gifts to bear, bringing magical, innate abilities to fruition. It is a tall order to protect, nourish and heal the Earth, and each other through education, land stewardship and rehabilitation, and a deepening integration of our lives in wild play with Creation.

The beautiful thing is…we have choice and the freedom to co-exist with Creation. I believe this can only come about through a deep recognition that we belong here, as children of Creator and Creation. We must defeat the neuroses and self-destructive illnesses of our terminal programming while simultaneously, heroically embracing our own Creative destinies.

I envision this land as a sacred place where people of all ages and walks of life come together to celebrate our human capacities, through a cohesive, working/playing, teaching/learning, holistic/healing community: ‘Elemental Collective’.  “Elemental” because it is about getting back to the basics of our original human nature, a beautiful dance with the Nature as it flows and unfolds from within its own Essential Being. The 4 Sacred Elements are the alchemy of this dance, and the 5th Sacred being the Spiritual Quintessence which invisibly holds it all together.

Address to the Elementals 🌱💨🔥💦 🌀

Earth is neither flat nor spherical. She is rotund perhaps.  Pregnant with Life. Regardless of her shape and girth, the Earth is in fact, a body.  A living being.  Earth is in reality, our body.  Our collective ground.

As an Earth Guardian, we Conscientiously inhabit the Earth and the land we dwell upon through deep care, connection and play.  We acknowledge and stand for the Earth and all her creatures, seen and unseen in the interwoven webs that bind us all. We are in our very flesh, bones and salt, the Element of Earth.  We celebrate and tend to the wilds of our own bodies and seek to restore and regenerate Lands that have been abused. We honour the ancient ways of all ancestors and our fellow Earthlings that live in harmony with Natural Law, and the cycles of Creation, Death and Renewal that are embedded within this Realm.  We are hunters, gatherers, healers and growers. We are Children of the Earth.

Gaia, Mother Earth

As an Air Guardian, we inhale and exhale the Breath of Life, in an unseen exchange that flows over mountains, through the valley ways and forests of our inter-connective lungs.  We are in-spired by living breath of plants, muses and clouds, sharing air, song and whispered prayers with the Invisible Ones.  We seek to meditate through deep flow of breath and whistle the wind song of our soul’s pilgrimage, remembering that Air is the messenger of our Spirit’s longing.  Through plants, and trees, we honour the interchange of the energies of Air, and we work to keep the integrity of our own spoken words as harbingers of good will and truth-telling.

As a Fire Guardian we tend the Sacred Fire 🔥 as a harbinger of light, warmth and truth. We seek counsel with the visions within the dancing coals, and are inspired by tongues of flame, and the smouldering fire within our chests.  We seek balance with the Element of Fire, in a world that is burning itself to ash.  We honour the life-giving Sun, as the Eternal Fire that ignites within every living being, and are humbled by its brilliance.  We send our prayers up with the rising smoke of Cedar, Sage and Sweetgrass, remembering that Fire is a Gift, not a curse of Humankind.

As a Water Guardian, we swim in the liquid medium, through rain, rivers and rapids, as it also courses through our very veins.  It is the translucent fluid of life itself.  Water is flow and cleansing nourishment. We are anointed and baptized within an amniotic ocean in the primordial Womb of Birth. We aim to drink deeply from the life-giving waters and seek to protect the sacred waterways from toxic effluents both within and without.  As our thoughts and words become water, let our hearts pump from the deep well of  gratitude and give blessings to the Element of Water that quenches our soul’s thirst!

4 Elementals/Directions Invocation

Guardian of the East, element of Air, the sacred breath; I invite you in.  Come blow the debris away from my heart and mind, so I may soar with Eagle as the witness, learning and living the art of conscious communication.  With each rising sun you bring continued lessons on new beginnings.

Guardian of the South, element of Fire, the sacred heart; I invite you in.  Come burn through my illusions of separation, so I may run with Wolf at play, igniting the passions of creativity that burn deep inside my being.  With your flickering flame you bring lessons that can purify me of the old ways, so I may transform anew.

Guardian of the West, element of Water, the sacred womb; I invite you in.  Come wash over me with your sea of compassion.  Giving me the strength of Salmon to wade through my ocean of emotions, so I may move from a place of grace and power.  With your cascading waterfalls your bring lessons of living in abundance and harmony with all life.

Guardian of the North, element of Earth, the sacred body; I invite you in.  Come ground my energy in your strong and stable roots.  Teach me the wisdom of Bear, so I may walk with strength and integrity, and learn when to speak and when to listen.  With your nurturing ways you bring powerful lessons in forgiveness and acceptance.  May we learn from you to live as ONE.

Mama Gaia, Earth love, rising from below above.  I call you come, entwine my roots with yours.  With every breath I take our roots grow, down and out, spreading throughout the Earth and entangling with all roots, and mycelium, forming the flower of life within your body.  Fill our roots with your transmutational flame of purification that we may vibrate into ecstatic evolution. In complete surrender of body, mind, and soul, I open to receive your mandala of creation.

Father Sky

Father Sky, I call you come; fill my longing heart with your golden nectar and sweet Ether, that I may once again know your loving embrace and receive the tools for integration.  With every breath I take, I expand into love, returning home to your heavenly abode.  In complete surrender of body, mind, and soul I open to receive the codes of light, overlaying the divine blueprint of my soul.

Mother Earth and Father Sky, I call you now to marry as ONE.  Dance me awake into the new paradigm of your higher consciousness and balance my heart with your love, birthing me anew in the sacred union of divinity.

As above, so below.  As without, so within.

The Elemental Collective seeks to create a harmonious culture of humans living in attunement with the natural community of plants, animals and elemental powers in accord with Natural Law. We call this ‘Tending Creator’s Creation’. Our mission is to accomplish this by continuing to offer nature education, workshops, retreats, celebratory & culinary events, art, healing, and ceremony. Hence our mission statement tagline is summed up thus:

Taking a stand and restoring the Land for our past, present and future generations.

Or more philosophically:

Uniting through Natural Law
Reclaiming our Divine Sovereignty
New Earth Restoration
Tending Creators Creation

Cello Bride playing at Chautauqua Cascadia

We strive to inspire further generations of land stewards and community co-operatives by sharing the knowledge needed to sustain and thrive as human beings. Honoring all life forces & fostering a deeper commitment with the Earth, we attend to the interwoven threads of personal, community and bioregional relationships.

By forming a Co-operative we are bringing together the diverse gifts, knowledge and experience of our team, the Elemental Guardians. Our first major goal is to purchase the land we are living on, in order to bring a much needed alternative project of ‘doing business differently’ than most of the current models that are in crisis. It is a visionary venture, and there are countless challenges to surmount, but the steadfast hearts of our fellowship are up to the task!

Our mission of service and stewardship ❤️🔥

Our Fellowship’s Vision

Dante on the Green Tree Throne

Dante’s Vision

My vision for this land took place over 20 years ago, when doing an art visioning board for a ‘Permaculture Paradise’ that had been lit up in my Heart..
I envision this land being embraced and restored through permaculture, wild plants, animal corridors and habitats, obstacle course,  pathways, meditative gardens, event centre, outdoor shared kitchen/dining, play spaces, a store and a sacred sitting spot where stillness, connection and visions are nurtured. I have lived on this land, ‘Shire by the Sea’ for over 12 years and recognized it as the place in my original vision when I first stepped foot on it. Since then I have slowly been gathering in the elements and people to help manifest the image. Elemental Collective is an orchestral unity that will create this symphony of connection between Creator, community and the land.

To delve deeper into Dante’s Vision, click here:

Nature’s Chef Vision

Re-Wilding culture through wild food-medicine and nature inspired dining experiences. Reconnecting our ancestral roots to build empowered resilient coastal people in return to help protect the natural forces. Tom would like to offer a wild culinary arts program for chefs and foodies as well as foraging workshops throughout the year. He will run the food and beverage of Elemental Collective, nourishing the events that take place. A vision of collaborating with facilitators from around the globe, exchanging sacred knowledge, holding space to run retreats that can be up to a week long . He see’s a sort of glamping experience where you would learn these vital skills and be inspired to take that home. His dream is to have the outdoor kitchen complete with a connected gathering space all built with sustainable materials like cob.

Naomi Grace’s Vision

Naomi’s role as part of the Elemental Collective is varied. She is a mama to four wild cubs and most of her days are filled with raising them. She is a growing herbalist & loves to work with the many plant allies on the land here & in our bio-region.

Naomi is also a sovereign birth support woman, a space holder, specifically for prenatal, birth, post partum. Holding space and gently guiding or reminding others of their strength through life’s big transitions.

Being on this land the past 7 years has transformed her life and continues to in unexpected ways. When she met first met Dante and committed to him and this land she had no idea the powerful journey that would unfold. This is part of why she does the work she does and wants to be able to continue to share and grow with others and her family on this beautiful earth.

Written Testimonials:

I am sending this along in hopes to help bare witness the impact of what elemental collective has done to this sacred space these past years. Embodying that sense of quietness as you are welcomed into the arms of what community looks like. Accompanied by singing birds, sweet smells of the flowers and tree, the joy and stillness that only this space can give. This property is a beautiful example of what community, support, shared conversations, sharing knowledge and skills and taking back what has been so lost in the business of the world. I appreciate watching this place grow, thrive and nourish so many souls, touching and spreading it magic.

The land is the place I come to with overburdened full of anxiety, too busy from life. It grounds me, freeing me to be still to appreciate the wonders all around!

Every time I set my bare feet upon the grasslands of the shire @ Elemental Collective, I feel myself plug in to the mycelial web grid of consciousness that is anchored there – that pulses with organic frequency. This familiar energy alone is enough to instantly ground my nervous system and reconnect me to my wild roots. The relationship that has been cultivated there is tangibly felt: between the land, plants, animals & humans. The devotion & care is embodied and the inspiration is active in all of the communal projects, collaborative events & rich offerings that are shared with all walks of life. This beautiful, timeless place feels like coming home every time I visit. It reminds me of my wildness, my humanness, my connection to the natural laws & cycles of life and I have witnessed, countless times, how it impacts others who step foot there. I have so much gratitude for all of the work these folks have done in reestablishing a blueprint of an organic way to live in the middle of a colonial world – reclaiming harmony with earth & sharing that way of life with all who come along, who are knowingly or unknowingly thirsty for this reconnection.

~ Hayley Shakti

This is a special piece of land, everyone involved knows that.  It has always been a hub of growth for all who come and spend time here.  The workshops, the gatherings, the classes, the community, so many people benefit when a place like this exists.  The families, the children, the teenagers and adults all come here for an experience that’s hard to find these days.  It’s centered around the importance of community and time in Nature and the knowledge and skills you can build around that.  Particularly the forgotten self reliance skills our ancestors had, the type of knowledge that gets families and communities through hard times.

As a teacher of Nature skills such as bushcraft and wilderness survival, I can tell you it’s hard to find available Land to teach classes .  We can’t teach  interactive skills in parks due to the “hands off” regulations, plus you need permission and costly permits. It’s inconvenient for most people to travel far away up the logging roads to crown land to attend a workshop. If you want to use existing camps, you’ll have pay high rental prices and go through red tape to just organize classes.

Dante and the crew have stewarded this beautiful land and opened it up to unforgettable experiences for so many people.  I can’t image them not being here and what would be lost if they had to leave.  It would have far reaching negative consequence for so many people, the ripple effect would continue to travel because the people that learn skills here pass them on to others, and those pass it on again.

In conclusion, I believe what’s happening here at “The Shire” is desperately needed at this time, it’s an experience that’s hard to find, and it would be a tragedy to lose it. It represents care and responsibility to Land, Community, and the proliferation of valuable Skills and Knowledge.

Thanks for reading,

~Taylor Mar

This land is love.
The spirit of mother nature is strong within and around her.
Children and adults alike learn an incredible amount from just being here with her, along with the good folks who live, steward, and visit her.
A great amount has been done thus far, to respect, protect, and restore both her natural ecosystems, and her sustainable food and medicine production.
This land is, and hopefully will continue for centuries, to provide the teachings for humanity, a positive model that could be replicated for the greater good, locally and globally.
The land heals and helps heal. Unfortunately the school land has lost nearly 100% of its native plant ecosystems, including the native and natural plants that would give the children shade, protection, clean air, and so much more.
Fortunately, the Shire by the Sea could provide some of the natural tree shade they needed.
There are infinite other benefits those children, and others, can learn from the models that are provided here, on their neighbouring land, many of which will affect their health and futures. Models like this can give us all a better chance at a healthy earth. I have been volunteering my time and energy to helping steward this sacred land, utilizing many of my skills, knowledge, wisdom and experiences for the greater good, of the earth, of the children and of many others, and hope to be able to continue this in a greater way.
I wish this sacred land will continue to remain, for the benefit of infinite generations, of all species, for the greater good of all.
Sincerely Tree S.

The Land

‘Shire by the Sea’ is one of the pet names we have bestowed upon this land we are dwelling. Evocative of Tolkien’s Middle Earth, this magical place seems cloaked between an elusive Elvin mist of the Undying Lands, and a forgotten Hobbiton nook beyond the South Farthing. If this sounds strange to your ears or you’re not familiar with Lord of the Rings lore, take heed, you will feel the magic stir the moment you step foot on the land, as a long forgotten memory seems to shimmer in the mind’s eye…

The 3 Sisters is a gigantic  Ent triplet Sitka Spruce that is the tallest tree on the land, overseeing the greatest 360  of the surrounding vistas. Juan de Fuca spreads out towards the South and the old John Muir Barn hails to the East.  The 3 Sisters has swings, including a surfboard and tire swing, climbing platforms and will gradually have up to 7 levels reaching towards the Sky.

John Muir Barn

Nootka Rose is a prolific companion on the land, providing lots of food for the local bees 🐝 and delicious medicines in the forms of teas, meads, and marmalades.

The tipi is a sacred space devoted to ceremony, celebrations and sleep by the cozy fire 🔥 We had a bear tear into it this year, and although we patched it up, it looks like we’ll be getting a new canvas in the coming year, with the old canvas being up-cycled for our sweat hut.
